Woman Banned from Breastfeeding Because of Tattoo

There had been issues about breastfeeding- on various angles and occurrences. But this one is different as it involved tattooing and breastfeeding.

mother banned breastfeeding tattoo

A 20-year-old Australian woman was tattooed after giving birth and was banned from breastfeeding by a judge as it may expose the baby to some risk, AFP reported.

"Does that mean that women who expose themselves to any sort of risks around the contraction of a blood-borne virus... shouldn't be allowed to breastfeed?" the unidentified woman, who had submitted an appeal to be heard by the Family Court in Sydney on Friday.

The woman had a tattoo on a finger and a foot without telling the tattoo artist she was breastfeeding.

Because of this, the father of the 11-month-old boy, who is separated from the mother, claimed that his former partner had mental health and drug issues, thus, taking custody of the child.

The Federal Circuit Court agreed on the woman's petition to have primary care of the child provided that she avoid breastfeeding.

Despite coming out negative for hepatitis and HIV tests, she was still prohibited to do breastfeeding because she may have contracted a blood-borne disease when having the tattoos.

Chief executive Rebecca Naylor of the Australian Breastfeeding Association said that as long as the tattoo was done in a reputable way and the infection control procedures are followed, the woman is safe and capable of breastfeeding.

So, what do you think of this story? I honestly think the woman could and should breastfeed her son. The HIV and hepatitis results turned negative anyway. And it would benefit the baby.

We have to bear in mind that not all moms are able to breastfeed their young ones. This woman was blessed to produce milk and provide milk. Why hinder that blessing?

Yes, it is not safe to have a tattoo WHILE pregnant but this case is different because she was tattooed after giving birth and was even tested to speculated risk that may harm the baby.

What are your thoughts?

The Breast Pumps and Feeding Bottles are Out!

wean breastfeeding

Yes, it is indeed time. Bella turned two years and two months yesterday but is still breastfeeding. She seldom drinks milk from her bottle and she uses spout instead of a nipple. It was hard for me to wean her before because it was heartbreaking to see her craving for my milk. I guess she was too young to wean. But today, I decided to wean her because:

1. I think she's getting thinner because the nutrients she gets from my milk is no longer sufficient.
2. I am thinner too. lol
3. She's two! She is heavier and taller!
4. She's going to play school next month and I really need to wean her.
5. Hubby thinks we should really stop breastfeeding Bella because she is a big girl now.

And so we did that today. I said hi to the breast pump and Bella said hello to her silicon nipple. It was her first time to use it. Since she doesn't have a choice, she has to do it. She even said the formula milk and her feeding bottle is her new favorite. But she really had a difficult time sleeping. She got used to falling asleep while breastfeeding. She slept so late today. It is already 4:30 A.M. here right now.

As for me, I need to pump the milk every time I feel that it's gonna drip or if there is a pain on my breast or on my back. This is a huge change for me. Imagine breastfeeding for two years and two months! I can now wear my other clothes and will no longer worry about buying clothes without opening/buttons on the front.lol

What did I do to make her stop from breastfeeding? I just sliced some lemons and squeezed a bit of juice on both nipples. When she tasted it, she was totally disgusted and said, "Yucky yucky deedee". She calls my breasts as "deedee". Sometimes, she would open my blouse and try to deedee but still, it tastes yucky. So, even if I ask her to try deedee she won't! She knows it's very yucky. hahaha..Hubby and I were even giggling at her because she looks funny every time she opens my blouse and would attempt to put her mouth on it. Before her lips reach my nipples, she'll remember how it taste and would cover my nipples with my blouse again.lol

I love breastfeeding because Bella and I got tons of benefit from it but we all know that it doesn't stay that way forever. And for us, today is the time to stop. How about you mommies? How did you wean your baby from breastfeeding?

Mothers and the Youth Unite for a Worldwide Breastfeeding Campaign 2013

The world has changed. People think differently and act differently even when it points to a natural thing. Some people have forgotten the value of breastfeeding which moved many breastfeeding moms and advocates to once again open the eyes of the people about this amazingly ordinary thing that benefits both the mother and the baby. Why is something good being dumped anyway? Let us take a brief review on the benefits of breastfeeding so that those who are unaware of it will be informed.

Benefits for Mom and Baby

Breast milk is made for babies and so it has to be given to them. No formula can duplicate the nutrients that breast milk can give. There are mothers who prefer to breastfeed on the first stages of the baby’s life. This is perfectly fine because it is during those times that the baby needs it the most. Aside from being a natural thing, breastfeeding can also give the following benefits to the baby:

1. Strong immune system against infections and diseases like ear infections, respiratory illness, gastro-intestinal infection and others
2. Decrease in probability of Sudden Infant Death (SID)
3. Saves baby from obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, eczema, child cancer and others.
4. Will grow up feeling secured, mature and assertive
5. Increase mother and baby attachment
6. Better mental and physical development

Aside from the positive things it can give the baby, it can also benefit the mother in so many ways. As a breastfeeding mom, I totally agree that breastfeeding is not just a convenient thing but also brings in a lot of wonders for me and my baby. For mothers, we are benefited from breastfeeding through the following:

1. Convenience since breast milk is readily available
2. Helps burn up to 500 calories a day and get back our figure
3. Protects moms from ovarian cancer, breast cancer and weak bones in later life
4. With delayed ovulation, moms can practice child spacing
5. Promotes emotional health
6. Ability to provide free and inexpensive milk

Since breastfeeding can benefit both the mother and the baby, it is indeed an amazing thing. Once mothers are aware of these benefits, they would be moved to do it for their babies and would not be bothered with what other people would say about it.

Let Us Support Breastfeeding

Issues on breastfeeding in public were raised. Moms were restricted to breastfeed in restaurants, airplanes, parks and other public areas no matter how discreet they are. But moms continually stood up for their rights and for their babies’ rights.  Some mothers would not decide to breastfeed due to the belief of some breastfeeding myths or are not really able to provide milk to their babies even if they want to. It is important that mothers are provided with accurate information about breastfeeding so that they are aware of their rights and the benefits they can get from something natural and ordinary.

As we celebrate Breastfeeding Month this August and the World Breastfeeding Week from August 1-7, 2013, let us take steps to instill awareness not just to mothers but to every individual worldwide. With that, the Rotaract Club of Kandaya-Tacloban Community Based, which is an organization I work with, would take steps in promoting breastfeeding through a Worldwide Breastfeeding Campaign. Breastfeeding is one the advocacy of Rotary International. Rotaract club is a Rotary sponsored club comprised of young people with more than 8,400 clubs around the globe. It is our aim to work hand in hand with mothers to promote awareness on breastfeeding and to inculcate respect in the hearts of every individual towards breastfeeding moms. The campaign starts August 6 and will end September 30, 2013.

We are inviting other Mommy Bloggers to share their stories and articles about breastfeeding so that everyone who would stop by could get every single information they need through your blogs and websites.

We are also inviting all the Rotaract Clubs around the globe to join us in this campaign. All you have to do is:

1. Create a banner or an image that promotes awareness for breastfeeding.
2. Post it in your Facebook Page or Website.
3. Encourage other people to share it.
4. Post a link in the linky list below. Provide the link, name of club and email address.

At the end of the campaign, we will create a compilation of all the banners that each Rotaract Club has created and would cascade it to other Breastfeeding Advocates so that it can be used for their own campaigns. Now what are you waiting for? Join us now and help save lives.

Breastfeeding in Public- Why NOT?

Image: Petr Kratochvil

I saw a story in Yahoo wherein Jackie Johnson-Smith breastfed her baby in a restaurant and received this note from the waitress:

Image from Yahoo as Courtesy of Jackie Johnson-Smith
Her story moved me. The article, Breastfeeding Note From Pizza Waitress Pays It Forward rings a bell. You can check on the story as well.

I am still breastfeeding Bella until now (she is turning 2 next month) and I am not ashamed of doing it even on public. I was oblivious of the fact that in some countries, they look at breastfeeding as something that needs to be done in private. But what if the baby gets hungry while you are in a public place?

It is time that people will have a wider and deeper perspective on this. Breastfeeding is not about exposing a mom's breast but it is about feeding a baby. I breastfeed Bella even when we are on a public vehicle or in restaurants because I think of her sake first instead of thinking of what others will say. If grownups can eat in public, why can't babies eat in public in the form of breastfeeding? If only people can think of the real value of breastfeeding, then they will surely appreciate moms who breastfeed their babies.

In our country, it is okay for us to breastfeed in public but of course, there are still breastfeeding areas in shopping malls. Some people who are open-minded would not be bothered seeing a breastfeeding mom but there are still some who look at it as improper. The truth is, it is not the act of moms that is improper. It is the dirty thoughts of those looking. If only they would just put aside their dirty minds and think about the benefits the baby can get from breastfeeding, then they will surely be able to understand it.

Since I do breastfeeding in public, allow me to share to you some tips on how to do it. Well, the first thing you need is the determination to keep your baby healthy and then everything else will follow. Aside from that, take note of these points:

1. Wear clothes that has buttons or zippers on the front. It could be a two-piece outfit or a dress. Just be sure that you can open your clothes easily and be able to breastfeed without exposing a lot of skin.

2. You can also bring with you a poncho, a shawl so you can drape it over the exposed part of your breast.

3. Scout for places where you can do breastfeeding. When in a restaurant, breastfeed on a corner or on areas where people won't directly see you like an out-of-the way table. Face away from people.

breastfeed public

Breastfeeding is best for babies, for mommies and even for the entire family. It has so many advantages like protecting the baby from different diseases and it can also help moms in so many marvelous ways. Why would we let our babies cry and fuss when we breastfeeding can make them feel calm?

Breastfeeding is my perfect way of taking care of Bella and no one else can do that for her. I know moms who breastfeed can relate to this. Some moms even struggle a lot from breast engorgement and pain but still breastfeed. While others have that strong desire to breastfeed their babies but are unable to do it because of some reasons. Moms who are able to breastfeed would grasp the chance to provide healthy milk to the babies. Breastfeeding is our way of showing love. And no one can stop us from loving.

I am a breastfeeding mom and I am confident of this decision that I have made even before Bella was born. I am confident of feeding my baby even in public because I know this will make her healthy. If other people think that this is a malicious act, then I do not care. Their dirty thoughts is a mark of ignorance. They are unconcerned of the welfare of babies and moms. Then, why be bothered about these people?

If you are a breastfeeding mom, be brave enough to feed your baby even in public. After all, the breasts were made not for lusting but for breastfeeding.

Proper Breastfeeding Techniques for Latching and Positioning

While I was still pregnant, I wondered how I could get milk. I was kinda worried I might not be able to give milk to baby. I have read a lot about the benefits breastfeeding can do to babies and I want my baby to get all those benefits. My worries ended when I gave birth because I had lots of milk! I even donated some of my milk to the nursery so that other babies can have them while their mothers are unable to give them milk. Well, Bella is one blessed baby indeed since I could give her all the milk she wants. The good thing about Bella is that she sucks milk really well. She was admitted in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for 1 week because of the UTI infection I had during pregnancy. So, it was important that she'd be able to suck milk really well so that she can recover fast. She was also underweight which is another reason why I have to make sure she gets enough milk from me.

Now, the first challenging thing about breastfeeding is how to get the proper latching technique. With the right latching, you will be able to make sure that your baby can suck milk well. The nurses taught me how to do it. I'm gonna share to you some techniques to get the proper breastfeed latching.

1. Place your hands under your breast. So, you'll be like cupping it. Then hold the nipples using your fore finger and your thumb. Point it towards your face. There might be milk coming out but that would be normal. Don't be bothered with the milk.

2. Now, position your baby's mouth just below the your nipple. Make sure that the baby is facing you and his/her body is straight. Just gently rob your finger near your baby's mouth. Or you can also use your nipple to tickle or stroke gently baby's cheeks. Your baby will respond by opening his or her mouth. Then, by the time your baby's mouth is open, drop your nipple inside the mouth. It would land deep into your baby's mouth.

It is important that your baby could suck well. The areola or the dark part of the breasts that surround the nipple should be inside the baby's mouth. The tongue should be under the nipple. The lips should be turned out. The chin is pressed against the mother's breast. The nose would also touch the mother's breast. The mouth should be positioned like the one in the image below:

Aside from proper latching, you also need to properly position your baby during breastfeeding. The mother needs to be comfortable while breastfeeding. The baby should be well supported, too. Poor sucking is not good for your baby because he/she won't be able to get proper feeding. You don't want your baby to go hungry for sure! Also, it could lead to some breastfeeding problems like sore nipples or inflamed breasts. That is why, proper latching is very important. Breastfeeding a baby does not hurt you. If you feel pain, then you are not doing it rightly. Start all over again.

We have mentioned about proper positioning when breastfeeding. Here is a picture that can teach you the right positions:

It is said that breastfeeding is a skill. But I do believe that every mother can do it especially if we will think of the good things it can give to our babies. I am a proud mother who breastfeeds my baby until this day. Bella is already 19 months old and she is still breastfed. Well, I am also one of those blessed moms who were able to produce a lot of milk to sustain our baby's needs.

I hope this story have helped moms who are currently having trouble breastfeeding. I also hope expecting moms will also find this helpful. Look forward for our article on the benefits of breastfeeding. Thanks for dropping by!
